Drug Medical Information

HERNIA OR RUPTURE

Hernia is the scientific name for a rapture. Nowadays, people know that there are spots in the walls of the body through which the tissues below may push or protrude, and they know that these occur most often in the groin but also in the midline of the abdomen or elsewhere in the body. When the tissues underneath the body force their way through an opening in the body wall, a lump will appear. If this is surrounded by tight tissues, it may lose its blood supply and become gangrenous. Sometimes ruptures are present at birth; sometimes they follow attempts to lift heavy objects; occasionally athletes get them from strain in competition.
Formerly, people tried to control ruptures by wearing trusses and supports and many of them still follow this uncomfortable procedure rather than to have the simple surgical operation that brings about permanent cure. The treatment of every rupture, naturally, depends upon the place where it is located. A method called the injection method has been tried, with a view to putting in substances which will create fibrous tissue and thus block the rapture. In the surgical method, the stitching is placed in such a way as to bring about permanent improvement. The surgical method is exact and the risk is slight. Today, with modern anesthetics and antibiotic drugs to prevent infections and blood transfusions to prevent shock, the patients usually get well in a very short time and are returned to an active, useful and more pleasant life.
