NIGHT CONDITIONS
Many conditions of disturbance of living are related to the night. Nightmare is a terrifying dream that usually awakens the sleeper with a sense of oppression and distress. A night cry is a shrill cry uttered by a child during sleep, which is sometimes related to the beginnings of definite disorders; on the other hand, far more often it is simply the reflection of a dream. Pain at night in the hips or knees may occur as a symptom of hip disease but also, like muscle cramps at night, may be without great significance. Frequently night palsy develops. This is a numbness of the extremities occurring during the night or upon waking in the morning, and which is related to the circulation of the blood. Lying long in one position may produce it, or lying on an arm such as happens in what doctors call "honeymoon paralysis." Night sweats frequently accompany fevers, and especially the fever of tuberculosis. Some people see better at night than others; they have night vision, which seems to be related to the supply of vitamin A. Night walking is called somnambulism, and is obviously quite definitely related to dreams which cause the person to get up and move about. Night terrors (pavor nocturnus) are descriptive of conditions which occur in children, perhaps because of bad psychological conditioning of adults. If it were not for adults, babies would never be afraid. They become frightened because older people frighten them with stories of the bogeyman. Older people teach them to fear policemen and doctors and burglars, and no doubt television and radio have helped this process. Babies have a fear of loud, sudden noises and they fear falling. When parents are overanxious and excessively affectionate, their attitudes are reflected in the child's thoughts and dreams. A common source of the development of night terrors is the threat that the child's hand or his sex organs will be cut off, because the parent or nursemaid has become displeased at something the child has done.
