MEDICAL ADVISER: WHAT IS PAIN
The human skin is sensitive to touch, heat and cold, and also to pain. In the skin are little nerve endings which respond with pain when touched with the point of a pin. Pain also occurs wherever there are nerves of sensation. Tests are developed for measuring the intensity of pain, but have not yet been so definitely accepted as to constitute standards. There may be pain from excessive heat applied to the skin; there is also pain from pressure on the skin. In order to test pain-relieving drugs, tests have been developed, using the pricking of a pin, burning of light rays, pressure or pinching; but these tests are only relative.
Pain is diminished in surgical operations by using anesthesia, by blocking nerves, by cutting nerves and by the use of pain-relieving drugs. Pain on the surface must be distinguished from pain in the bones, blood vessels or organs of the body. The neurologists have traced the pathways of pain, from the point of origin to the brain. Psychiatrists recognize psychogenic pain which is wholly mental. Psychogenic pains are vague, irregular in appearance, inclined to be exaggerated, and often accompanied by signs of excellent health otherwise. Psychiatric pains may be treated by psychiatry rather than by drugs. Finally, there are the indeterminate pains which people develop when they want to collect from insurance companies after accidents.
