HEARING PROBLEMS: OTOSCLEROSIS
Progressive deafness, associated with hardening of the small bones of the internal ear so that they fail to function. The exact cause of this condition is not known. Most authorities consider it a chronic inflammatory disease.
Otosclerosis occurs more often in women than in men. Sometimes the first complaint is a ringing in the ears, with gradual progressive loss of hearing. Sufficient hearing may remain to permit the person to follow ordinary conversation. In other cases the deafness is so severe that it becomes necessary to learn lip reading or to wear a hearing aid. The nature of the hearing aid should be determined by actual trial.
Some authorities have thought that otosclerosis was related to vitamin deficiencies, but this has not been proved. When the doctor examines the patient with otosclerosis, he makes certain that all of the accessory factors involved in hearing are properly functioning. The Eustachian tubes are cleaned, by blowing through them. The diet is investigated. Sedative drugs may be tried to control the ringing in the ears.
Recently, surgical operations have been developed to make a window from the outside into the internal ear. This has proved of vast benefit in many cases. Another new operation is called mobilization of the stapes which loosens up the ossicles or small bones inside the eardrum.
