HUMAN GLANDS: PANCREAS
A large gland situated in the abdomen near the stomach, liver and gall bladder, which secretes digestive ferments and makes insulin for the metabolism of sugar by the body.
Inflammations of the gall bladder often extend to the pancreas, and this makes them especially serious. Sometimes the pancreas is infected by germs brought from elsewhere in the body by way of the blood.
Infection of the pancreas may be associated with severe pain and difficulties of digestion. The determination of pancreatic infection in its relationship to the gall bladder is a difficult diagnosis.
Other conditions that affect the pancreas include cysts, stones and tumors. Excessive tissue in the pancreas results in excessive insulin and this may produce a condition called hyperinsulinism. People with excessive amounts of insulin in the blood may have symptoms which have caused them to be diagnosed as alcoholics. Most serious is cancer of the pancreas, because it is a vital organ and its removal is hazardous to life.
