SWEAT GLANDS AND PERSPIRATION
The sweat glands cause water to reach the surface of the skin, and by its evaporation the temperature of the body is controlled. Perspiration, or sweat, is about 98 per cent water. The odor of sweat varies, according to the part of the body from which it is secreted. Perspiration under the arms is likely to be odorous, because of the invasion of bacteria. Perspiration is increased by the drinking of warm drinks, by fright and anxiety, and by a number of drugs which stimulate the flow of water from the skin. Perspiration is decreased by cold, and by drugs which can stop perspiration. Many drugs are associated with dryness of the throat and skin.
Among the diseases that affect the sweat glands is hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating. This may sometimes be a symptom of a serious general condition.
People who perspire frequently should have underwear that does not retain moisture. They should not wear too much clothing. They may use dusting powders which help to limit perspiration. An offensive odor to the sweat generally is called bromidrosis. Colored perspiration is called chromidrosis.
