POISONING AND ITS EFFECTS ON HUMAN BODY
Poisons have serious effects on the human body, and there are many of them. Any drugs, such as acetanilide, alcohol, anilines, atropine, belladonna, boric acid, chloral or other drugs may produce poisoning. Also poisoning may result from gases, like ether, chloroform, carbon monoxide, acetyline or sulphur dioxide. Poisoning results from food, which has been contaminated by germs. Poisoning may result from sensitivity to substances like ivy. For each poison, there is a specific method of controlling it, called an antidote. In general, the first step is to get the poison out of the body. Before the doctor arrives, give whites of eggs, milk, or strong tea, which are antagonistic to many poisons. Vomiting may be provoked by tickling the back of the throat or by giving warm water with salt. With a stomach tube, to be swallowed, a person who knows how to use the tube can wash out the stomach. The simplest procedure is said to be a heaping teaspoonful of salt in a cup of lukewarm water - stir until the salt is dissolved, and have the poisoned person drink the mixture, repeating every three or four minutes until vomiting occurs.
Among common forms of poisoning are: arsenic poisoning, benzine poisoning, coal-oil poisoning, boric-acid poisoning and mercury poisoning. These are substances commonly used in industry and in life.
