TALKING ABOUT SCIATICA
The long nerve known as the sciatic nerve passes from the lower part of the spinal column out of the spinal canal through some openings between the bones, then down the back of the thigh and onward to the leg. This nerve, the longest in the body, may become inflamed from a number of causes, and when it does it causes the neuritis called sciatica. In examination for the presence of sciatica, the doctor looks for curvature of the spine or any pressure that might result from bones in wrong positions. He studies the legs for signs of spasms of the muscles. A simple test is to raise the leg in a straight position while lying flat on the back. This puts a strain on the large hamstring muscles, which in turn refer the strain to the nerve. Studies are made with the X-ray of the condition of the sacroiliac joint. Of utmost importance in sciatica are rest, relief from tension, and support to the inflamed tissues. Heat is helpful in relieving pain. Infections are controlled by the usual methods. Surgical procedures include work on the bones and muscles or on the nerve itself.
