Drug Medical Information
WHAT ABOUT GOITER?
Goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland which lies in the front of the neck. The thyroid glands are important in handling iodine for the body. Practically all of the iodine which comes into the body in eggs, milk, bread, shellfish or salt is deposited in the thyroid gland.
Goiters are (1) simple enlargements of the gland; (2) excessive activity of the gland. The simple enlargement of the gland which may come on, particularly in girls, around adolescence is due usually to a deficiency of iodine. Pregnant women need more iodine than at other times, to prevent the occurrence of changes in the thyroid in children.
When the thyroid gland enlarges and its activity becomes excessive, an excess amount of the secretion of the thyroid gland gets into the body. This secretion is called thyroxin. The condition is called exophthalmic goiter and is often associated with nerve strain. The eyeballs project, the heart beats rapidly and the basal metabolism rate is raised, showing that extensive chemical changes are going on in the body. With the nervousness, excitability and loss of weight come fatigue. Anyone with exophthalmic goiter needs careful attention by the doctor to determine the nature and extent of the condition. Various drugs have been developed to control exophthalmic goiter, including, for example, thiouracil and radioactive iodine. Treatment also may be application of X-ray or surgical removal of the gland.
Occasionally the thyroid gland becomes subject to tumors or cancers, which need prompt diagnosis by the doctor.
