NEPHRITIS OR INFLAMMATION OF THE KIDNEY
Several forms are known, depending on the portion of the kidney attacked or the cause of the infection. Interstitial nephritis attacks the tissue between the cells of the kidney and, when it becomes chronic, is associated with a rise in the blood pressure and other serious changes in the body. The nephritis may attack the tubules of the kidney or the glomeruli, which are the portions that develop the urine. In an acute infection of the kidney, the tissues swell and enough poisoning of the body may occur to cause convulsions or unconsciousness.
Chronic inflammation of the kidney or chronic interstitial nephritis is known as Blight's disease.
The conditions likely to cause suspicion of infection of the kidneys include headache, mental depression and fatigue; the skin develops a pale or pasty appearance, with swelling or puffiness under the eyes, on the backs of the hands and around the feet; the blood pressure rises; accumulation of fluid in the body may become enormous. The diagnosis is made through examination of the urine, which will show a large amount of albumin and also cells from the kidneys, sometimes in the form of actual moldings in the shape of the tubules. These are called casts.
In the presence of acute inflammation of the kidney, immediate rest in bed is desirable, with a simple and nutritious diet. Everything should be done to protect the kidneys against an overburdening of material.
