A child is born with substances in his blood derived from the mother which enable him to resist certain infections. These gradually disappear from the blood, so that after from six to nine months, the child needs extra protection against common infectious diseases.
At about nine months of age, children should be vaccinated against smallpox; by the twelfth month, they should be protected against diphtheria with the toxoid; inoculations are also available against lockjaw, or tetanus. Newest among the inoculations is the one against infantile paralysis. This is given now in three injections: the first two weeks apart; the third ten months later. Also the Sabin vaccine which is taken by mouth. Sometimes inoculation against diphtheria, whooping cough, lockjaw and poliomyelitis is given in one injection. For protection against measles gamma globulin may be given, which also protects against infectious hepatitis and, to some extent, against infantile paralysis. Substances are available for protection against typhoid and paratyphoid and against typhus, yellow fever, cholera and dysentery. These inoculations are used particularly when persons are going to areas where they will be especially exposed.
